"For the Love of Books" Featured on “Brattlecast” Podcast
For the Love of Books was recently the subject of an episode of the Brattlecast, a podcast about book collecting and bookselling. Ken Gloss, the owner of the storied used and rare books store Brattle Book Shop in Boston, spoke about one of the main themes of FLB, noting that our books are reflections of us.
Ken’s review of FLB is very much in tune with the philosophy and methodologies that drive my work. One of my favorite quotes from the podcast:
"... A lot of what a library is, is reflecting on your personality, it's reflecting on who you are. You walk into someone's house and you see their books, and you can tell a lot about what their interests were or what they read."
As mentioned in the podcast, FLB is an appreciation of books’ multi-dimensional value; while many of us own books because of the words on their pages, many of us also find meaning and pleasure in the visual of having books in your home.
There are a number of reasons to bring books into the spaces you inhabit. The podcast highlights the fact that I frequently work with architects and interior designers to create libraries that are part of the foundation and structure — literally — of people’s homes. This is because I recognize that the act of choosing a book for your shelf is something personal, even revelatory, and deserves to be an important part of the process of making your home your own.
